Jess Phillips

What does motherhood mean to Jess Phillips?

In this personal and exclusive book, the author, activist and MP explores the life, influence and passing of her mother Jean, the impact of having her own children, what it’s like to be a working mum in Westminster, the current climate and why women shouldn’t be defined or stigmatised by the choices they make.

The book also includes a special foreword by the Mother of the House, Harriet Harman MP.

Words on Mother

"I wanted to do this project because it is important that innovative ideas in publishing are explored. And the Birmingham connection is pretty much the first and best way to my heart.

"Motherhood will be a subject I return to again and again in my writing because I guess it is my ultimate source material. All of my opportunities, most of my influences and all of my hopes spring from my experience of motherhood as an actor and spectator. Motherhood and what it means to society is the feminist issue that drives all my politics.

"I love writing because it is like catharsis. I do it best when I am cross or elated as if I have to get the feeling out."
